Get busy being happy, or get out of the way.

I recently attended an Indian Pow Wow and while browsing through the arts and crafts I came across a burden basket, which is a combination of a dream catcher and a basket intertwined with decorations of different colored beads and a variety of feathers.   The Cherokee people believe you should not bring your burdens into their homes and while you are a guest you are at ease and carefree.  The basket hangs on the front door and your guest would symbolically place their burdens aside and enjoy the warm spirit that their host had to offer while visiting with them.   It is small reminders that help set the tone for me sometimes and I hope by sharing this short story it will do the same for you.

People study the science of happiness and share it in a variety of blogs and studies published on the Internet.  Trained professionals like psychologists and life coaches dedicate their lives to making people achieve a greater state of happiness.  The brain is an amazing organ that can bring us great joy and laughter into our lives or also create great sorrow and tears.  The universal hope is that we can all achieve a greater state of inner peace and we all have our own quirky little ways of doing so.  I have outlined 5 basic reminders of things to help with putting your mind and body at ease as another constant reminder that we were designed to be happy.

1. Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors are trained doctors who specialize in detecting and reducing misalignments of the spine called vertebral subluxation that interfere with central nervous system function. Subluxations can cause inflammation of the joint and nerve root as well as lack of motion, which can cause joint degeneration. (1) It makes perfect sense to me that if I am looking for balance in my life then why not see a chiropractor to put my spine back in alignment so structurally I am more balanced.

2. Essential Oils

We have all experienced that emotional response when a familiar smell enters our nasal passages.  It can either be a positive or negative feeling that our limbic system creates through our body when this occurs. Arm yourself with a starter kit of essential oils and start experimenting with how the different odors make you feel.  The combination of smells can uplift your spirits and make you feel happy.

3.  Yoga

One of the greatest practice techniques to empower you – mind, body, and spirit – is yoga.  If you have never tried yoga then start with a beginner class at your local YMCA or social center.  Yoga embraces all walks of life and encourages those to seek a greater sense of health through yoga fitness.  I never thought I would have been the type to try yoga when I was growing up and now that I have incorporated some of the practice techniques into my lifestyle I will never look back and neither should you.

4.  Meditation

Meditation has taken its place as another great divide for those who choose to be happy and healthy vs those who dwell in darkness and despair.  Have you ever heard the statement, “It’s all a state of mind”?  Well, I’m am here to tell you, folks, that this is a mind over matter kind of life we live and maybe meditation is something you should try if you feel you are struggling in one way or another.

5.  Dancing

Dancing is something our American culture does not embrace nearly enough.  Maybe it stems from those awkward years at our junior high dances and when no one is sure what to do and it carries over into our later years.  I have found much joy in dancing and have become more comfortable over the years with the practice.  I still look for those events where I can move to the music and forget about life for a while and I urge you to do the same.  Whether it’s country line dancing or just getting to the club on a Friday night.  Get out there and start moving.

The moral of my blog is to remind you of the things you know you should be doing.  If you are already doing these things and still not where you want to be in life, then find something else to do.  There are only so many more days that to enjoy on this planet so get out there and start creating positivity however you can.  Positivity attracts positivity and you will soon find that twinkle in your eye shining brighter.

  1. It’s a great idea to put your burdens aside for awhile. When you return to them, you come with a fresh train of thought. Find balance in your life. Life is too short…..enjoy it!
